Package Coding Management - The Right Solution for Business
By: john mce

Package coding management is an important factor in food manufacture, where it is a proven means of preventing coding errors for increased accuracy.

The potential consequences of inaccurately labelled produce is frightening for businesses; fines, recalls and consumer dissatisfaction. In the worst case scenario, the implications of an accident caused by mislabelled food could be disastrous; sickness, ill health, maybe even death, and that's sure to mean at least some bad publicity for the business in question.

A centralised package coding management system is essential to take the strain off employees and post-production inspectors.

When marking a product manually, there is often a lot of information to be inputted. The more information there is to be entered, the bigger the margin of error.

Manually entering this information is slow, inefficient and prone to human error. No amount of training can disregard human error.

Often, the numbers and codes being entered are meaningless. Their context is dependant on being associated with a particular product. It's too easy for gaps in concentration to lead to incorrect labelling.

Generally, manual quality inspection systems can pick up a labelling error at another point on the production line, but the amount of lost work and wasted parts make 'after-the-fact' inspection simply a damage report rather than a solution.
Packaging Coding Management (PCM) can play an important part in preventing these kinds of errors. It provides an effective way of minimising the risk of mislabelling products or inputting incorrect information, meaning more accuracy and better efficiency.

PCM also reduces the risk of employees entering this information contracting Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).

In Package Coding Management systems, all information is managed centrally. Once all the data is checked, the operator can simply choose a job from a list and begin the production run. Tiered job selection is used to reduce the window for error, rather than typing in the specific part number, the operator is asked to select it from a list. It is simple, intuitive and removes human error.

Alternatively, the operator can use a hand-held barcode reader to confirm the correct part and part number have been selected for the job, barcode scanning being much more accurate than manual entry.

To sum up, the benefits of Package Coding Management Systems - message design, secure product database and efficient job selection - create a reliable method of ensuring manufacturers do not make labelling errors on their products which can have a detrimental affect on business.
